Press Release for 81 Houses in Builth Wells

Barrie Davies, Director of Asbri Planning Ltd has successfully secured a resolution to grant planning permission for the development of up to 81 houses on a greenfield site at the edge of Builth Wells, Powys. On Thursday 11th August, Powys County Council’s planning committee voted overwhelmingly by 18 votes to 1 to approve the development subject to a S106 legal agreement which will secure the delivery of 30% affordable housing, an on-site area of play and a contribution of £6,000 towards the improvement of existing play facilities on The Groe.

The plans for the proposed development were prepared by Mid Wales based architects Doug Hughes Architects on behalf of the applicant Jason Richards, a local developer from the town.

The development will provide much needed affordable housing, starter homes and smaller family homes in the town which has experienced very little housing development in the last 15 years. The development will provide a welcome boost to the town and will hopefully help to increase roll numbers in the primary and high school which have  suffered from falling roll numbers due to a lack of development in the town.

Barrie Davies of Asbri Planning stated “We are absolutely delighted with this overwhelming decision of Powys County Council to grant permission. Development in the town has been stifled in recent years making it difficult for youngsters to get on the housing ladder and young families have struggled to find affordable family housing. We cannot afford to allow youngsters to leave the town as they are the lifeblood which will help maintain local facilities such as the schools and shops on the high street.”

“It is disappointing that the Town Council sought to change its stance on the project from one of initial support to objection on ‘technical grounds’ despite the very obvious benefits of the development for the town as a whole.”

Doug Hughes of Hughes Architects commented that “we designed the proposed development to provide a high proportion of 2 and 3 bedroom dwellings which is what is really needed in the town. It is great to see such positivity from the Local Planning Authority in addressing the housing problem in Builth and in the County as a whole.”
