National Slate Museum, Llanberis
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Renovation and refurbishment of the National Slate Museum to create an Interpretation Hub for the Slate Landscape of North West Wales World Heritage Site. The proposal to create such an Interpretation Hub fully aligns with the key themes of the World Heritage Site Management Plan which is focussed around ‘caring for’, ‘enjoying’, and ‘learning’ about the slate landscape, promoting the industrial legacy, culture and language.
In addition to internal and external works to the existing listed building to provide improved facilities, new build interventions in the form of the demolition of the existing café and retail shop, and their replacement with a new café and learning building, and new retail offer was proposed. Landscape, access and drainage improvements to the wider site also formed part of the proposals.
OUR INPUT
Asbri Planning were initially instructed in June 2023 as lead planning consultant responsible for securing planning and listed building consent for Amgueddfa Cymru to create the Interpretation Hub.
The site is of an exceptionally high level of significance in terms of heritage, consisting of a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Monument, and also been identified as part of the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Asbri Planning joined a large multi-disciplinary project team and was tasked as planning consultant to lead in negotiations and discussions with the Local Planning Authority and other key stakeholders including Cadw, and co-ordinate the design team from a Planning perspective.
The main planning and listed building consents were granted permission in early 2024. The successful contractor is now on site and Asbri Planning is coordinating, preparing and submitting discharge of condition applications as part of RIBA Stage 4 to enable works to carry on.
In addition, Asbri Planning is coordinating from a planning perspective a number of other focussed statutory planning submissions including Scheduled Monument Consent for works to the scheduled waterwheel; planning submission for an electric sub-station and skip store; and further listed building consent amendment submissions.
