Clwb Ifor Bach, Womanby Street, Cardiff

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Full planning permission and conservation area consent for the redevelopment of the iconic Clwb Ifor Bach on Womanby Street, right in the heart of Cardiff’s Music City area and adjacent to a number of listed buildings. The redevelopment will provide an extended 500 capacity venue with mezzanine on the ground floor, whilst importantly retaining a smaller 250 capacity venue on the second floor for local and emerging talent, thereby retaining the essence of Clwb. The scheme also comprises an external rooftop terrace and improved facilities for artists and gig goers.

There are a number of ‘smaller’ venues in Cardiff of up to circa 350 capacity, but then there is a big jump to a few 1,000 capacity venues and above. This means that bands who are starting off in their careers can play in Cardiff in one of the smaller venues but as they progress the jump from the smaller venues in Cardiff to the next size (1,000) is too large meaning some don’t tour Cardiff in this intermediary stage and subsequently don’t come back. The proposed 500 capacity venue at Clwb with its improved facilities would provide the additional capacity above a small venue and be a stepping stone to bands returning to Cardiff as they progress to larger venues.
